Ski Lines & Shorelines: Why Resurrection Bay is Alaska’s Ultimate Winter Wildlife Retreat

Imagine skiing corn snow all the way to the ocean, then watching sea otters from your deck. Discover the magic of the Resurrection Bay Ski & Wildlife Retreat in Seward, Alaska.

There are ski trips, and then there are expeditions.

A ski trip is standing in a lift line in Colorado, fighting for fresh tracks. An expedition is standing on a snowy peak in Alaska, looking down at a fjord that is so blue it doesn't look real, knowing you are about to ski 3,000 vertical feet directly toward the ocean.

Welcome to Resurrection Bay.

Located on the edge of the Kenai Fjords National Park near Seward, Alaska, this is one of the few places on earth where the mountains rise straight out of the sea. It is the setting for our Resurrection Bay Ski & Wildlife Retreat—and if you are looking for the trip of a lifetime, this is it.

Here is why skiing the "edge of America" needs to be on your 2025/2026 calendar.

1. The "Ski-to-Sea" Phenomenon

In most of the world, skiing happens at high altitude. In Resurrection Bay, the vert starts at the water.

This trip is famous for its "Sea-to-Summit" touring. You start your day at sea level, skin up through old-growth Sitka spruce forests, and pop out into massive alpine bowls.

  • The Snow: We target the spring season (March/April) for the legendary Alaska Corn Snow. The days are long, the snowpack is generally more stable, and the skiing is fast, smooth, and ego-boosting.

  • The View: There is nothing like linking turns while looking at the Gulf of Alaska. It messes with your perspective in the best way possible.

2. A Winter Wildlife Safari

Usually, on a ski trip, the only wildlife you see is a gray jay stealing your sandwich. In Resurrection Bay, the ocean is alive.

This retreat isn't just about the skiing; it's about the ecosystem.

  • The Marine Life: As we travel along the coast (often utilizing water taxis to access trailheads), keep your eyes peeled. It is common to see sea otters floating on their backs, harbor seals sunning on the ice, and porpoises playing in the wake.

  • The Birds: This is a birder's paradise. Bald Eagles are as common as pigeons here, watching you skin up from the trees.

3. The "Retreat" in the Wild

Alaska has a reputation for being harsh—cold tents and freeze-dried meals. We don't do that.

We believe that to ski hard, you need to rest well. This trip is designed as a Retreat.

  • The Lodging: We base ourselves in comfortable, warm cabins/yurts that serve as the perfect basecamp. Think cozy wood stoves, hot drinks, and a dry place to hang your skins.

  • The Pace: Because the days are long (up to 15 hours of light!), there is no "alpine start" panic. We can enjoy a slow breakfast, ski a full day, and still have plenty of daylight for après-ski wildlife watching by the water.

4. Human-Powered Exploration

There are no chairlifts here. This is pure, human-powered backcountry touring.

While heli-skiing is popular in Alaska, it disconnects you from the terrain. Touring allows you to earn your turns and truly understand the scale of the landscape.

  • Guided Safety: Alaska terrain is big and complex. Our AMGA-trained guides manage the glacier travel, avalanche assessment, and route finding. We find the goods—whether that's mellow powder glades or steeper alpine couloirs—based on the group's ability and safety.

5. Escape the Crowds

The Resurrection Bay area feels like the end of the earth. You won't be fighting for parking or crossing tracks with hundreds of other skiers. It is often just us, the mountains, and the sound of the ocean.

The Ultimate Spring Break

Forget the beach. If you want a spring break that rejuvenates your soul, come North.

Trade the sunscreen for glacier glasses and the surfboard for touring skis. The corn snow is waiting.
